Frequently Asked Questions
1. There are several of us from one church applying for the iPreach program. May we all apply separately?
Yes, you may - but It Is Written will grant a maximum of $5000 to any given church.
2. There are people in my church who are under the age of 18 who would like to participate - and even preach! Can they?
Of course! You can recruit as many people of any age you want. But YOU will be responsible for the project. The lead in your project must be at least 18 years old or turning 18 in 2009.
3. Can several of us work together if we're all from one church?
Yes. But I would recommend that one person be appointed the lead coordinator, and that you clearly indicate the names of other GYC attendees somewhere on your application form (attach a page if necessary).
4. My friend was not at GYC and wants to apply. Can she?
Sorry, no. This is a joint project between GYC and It Is Written, and is open to GYC participants only.
5. If I am not accepted, can I still take advantage of the training and resources?
We have a number of valuable evangelistic resources available at It Is Written for your perusal. But if your application is not accepted this year, I'm afraid that the training resources created specifically for iPreach will not be available for you this year. We only have the resources necessary this year to support a maximum of 50 people.
6. My pastor is willing/curious, but he has a question. How can he ask it?
It's really quite simple: questions can be directed to the contact page or ipreach [at] iiw.org. Unfortunately, because of when the GYC convention falls in the year, it coincides with a 2 week period during which I will be away from a computer. We can start answering your queries by email on about January 7 or 8. It will still provide you time to get your request in. If your church board needs to make a decision before that date, encourage them to approve the project “subject to” their question being answered satisfactorily. This way if the right answer comes through for them after January 7, they will have already voted the project and do not need to reconvene.
7. It Is Written will match up to $5000 in funds raised by the church. Do we have to have the cash in hand before It Is Written will approve its grant?
No. We're looking for the intent of the church. You will demonstrate leadership skills throughout the year to be sure the church is on track raising the funds.
8. The grant is a maximum of $5000 in matching funds. Can we raise more?
Of course! Raise all the money you want to - but It Is Written's contribution is capped at $5000.
9. The deadline for applying is January 31. How soon will we know whether or not our application has been approved?
Almost right away - if you've given us a valid email address. After approval, your iPreach resource package will be sent right away.
10. How will the mentorship program work?
Lance Wilbur - with GYC - will be the head of the mentorship program. Each successful applicant will be assigned to a mentor who will provide prayer partnership, advice, moral support, etc. Your mentor will be working under the supervision of Lance Wilbur. Throughout the year, I will be training you through various means - online seminars, etc. You will have a phone number of someone you can call for help as you need it.
11. I need more help than a mentor! Can't somebody come out and help me put this thing together?
Sorry, no. This program is about more than simply preaching the message. It is an opportunity for leadership growth. You are expected to take charge of the project and call on your mentor as you need advice in making decisions. This is YOUR project - and we will help you any way we can, but we will not take charge of it!
12. Why do I have to approach the church board for support?
There are a number of reasons for this:
- We want you to work in harmony with your church and share this experience with everyone. The best evangelism happens when the church is behind it.
- Part of your experience is leadership training. Evangelists have to approach church boards all the time and carefully plan how they want to “wow” them with the potential of the project. You need to pray about what you're going to say, plan it, and deliver it!
I have provided a letter and a video appeal that you can download from the iPreach website. By all means, if you know how to rip the video to a DVD so it can play in a regular DVD player, do it. The video is yours to use as you see fit. You can also ask the pastor to look at it with you on a computer, etc. I would strongly encourage you to have the pastor watch it, so that he realizes that you are being backed by some great evangelistic organizations.
13. In the budget (p. 15) there is a line item for conference funding. If I add this amount to the church's investment, can we count the total to get our matching funds?
Yes, you can - even though it's a little confusing because the It Is Written matching fund comes on a line item between the church's funds and the conference funds. If your conference (ask your pastor about this) funds evangelistic campaigns in the local church, you can add this to the total. So - if your church is going to put in $3500, and the conference kicks in $1500, you can still get your $5000 matching grant. We will look at both totals to see what our gift will be.
14. May I preach my own sermons?
Of course! If you've been working on evangelistic sermons, by all means use them. They must cover the essential points of doctrine:
- Salvation
- Baptism
- The sanctuary/judgment message
- The law and the Sabbath as they relate to grace
- The state of the dead
- The health message
- The spirit of prophecy
- The remnant church.
If you plan to use your own sermons, please indicate this on your application form. We will probably ask you some questions about it, because as you preach, you will be representing It Is Written and GYC. I want to know what your plans are and approve them.
15. I don't have sermons! What will I be preaching?
Most likely, you'll be using the New Beginnings sermons - they are time tested and proven to be effective. I am right now exploring a couple of other possibilities, but this is not certain as of yet.
16. If I am not accepted, when can I apply again?
Next year! Bear in mind that the iPreach project is in its infancy, and may change a little over time. Next year, it might not look exactly like it did this year.
